WordPress: Enabling Breadcrumbs

The breadcrumbs show your visitors the path they have taken to arrive to the page they are currently viewing. Essentially, a breadcrumb is a small text path that serves as a secondary type of navigation.

For example, if a reader came to see your blog post titled “Skin Care Routine” which is located in the “Beauty” category of your blog, the breadcrumb to that post would look something like this: Home > Beauty > Skin Care Routine.

Install & Activate plugin

In order to add breadcrumbs, first choose one the plugins below, install and activate the plugin and then follow the instructions to enable the breadcrumbs.

Yoast SEO

  1. Login to your WordPress dashboard and go to Plugins > Add New.
  2. Search for Yoast SEO > install and activate it.
  3. Go back to your dashboard > click Yoast SEO from the left column > Search Appearance.
  4. Select Breadcrumbs.
  5. You can edit the settings like prefix, separator etc.
  6. Click on Save Changes.

All in One SEO

  1. Login to your WordPress dashboard > Plugins > Add New.
  2. Search for All in One SEO > install and activate it.
  3. Go back to your dashboard > click All in One SEO from the left column > General Settings.
  4. Select Breadcrumbs.
  5. Check Enable Breadcrumbs (unless it’s already checked).
  6. Check Shortcode for Show Breadcrumbs on Your Website.
  7. You can edit the settings such as prefix, separator etc.
  8. Click on Save Changes.

Rank Math

  1. From your WordPress dashboard, go to Plugins > Add New.
  2. Search for Rank Math SEO > install and activate it.
  3. Go back to your dashboard > click Rank Math from the left column > General Settings.
  4. Select Breadcrumbs.
  5. Check Enable breadcrumbs function.
  6. You can edit the settings like prefix, separator etc.
  7. Click on Save Changes.

Enable breadcrumbs

  1. Go to your WordPress dashboard > Appearance > Customize > Breadcrumbs.
  2. Select the SEO plugin you’ve installed.
  3. Check the pages you want to add breadcrumbs to (single, pages, etc).
  4. Click on Publish.
