For those familiar with WordPress, a blank menu might not raise any eyebrows. However, if you’re new to the platform or returning after some time away, you might be scratching your head wondering why your menu is devoid of content after installing a new theme.

To ensure the functionality of your menus, head over to Appearance > Menu to setup your menu.

Confirm that you have a menu. If not, follow this tutorial on how to create a menu in WordPress.

Verify if your menu has a designated location assigned. Below your menu items, you should see “Display Locations”. These options represent the menu areas integrated into your theme. Simply select the appropriate option for where you want your menu to be displayed, and remember to save your changes.

Your theme won’t look exactly like the demo version right away. Demo sites are full of text and professional photography to showcase everything the theme is capable of. You’ll need to create pages and posts, and start adding your own content in order to see the site start to take shape. Also, you can import the demo content and then replace the text and images with your own – no coding required!

Another reason would be that Reading settings are wrong. This means your theme either does or doesn’t require a home page to be set, and you have your site set to the opposite. So go to Settings > Reading and check the options under “Your homepage displays”:

If your theme doesn’t require any page template for the homepage layout, make sure this option is set to “Your latest posts”. If your theme does use a homepage template, have your site set to use a static homepage.

Our themes should install without any errors but, on some occasions, users might encounter issues, so here are the most common problems and their solutions:

The theme is missing the style.css stylesheet.

One of the most common problems is when users try to upload the Full zip file that includes sample data, documentation etc. and, as a result, they get the “The package could not be installed. The theme is missing the style.css stylesheet.” error. When you download your theme, the file has _UNZIP at the end which means that you have to extract the files. After extracting, make sure you are uploading the parent theme first (example: themename-1.0.zip), then the child theme (example: themename-child.zip).

White Screen Of Death

A “white screen of death” usually happens when your WordPress installation isn’t up to date, or when a 3rd party plugin is creating a conflict. To fix this, we would recommend you to disable all plugins and update WordPress before switching to a new theme.

500 Internal Server Error

This error typically happens for one of the following reasons:

Your server’s memory limit to PHP is too low (most common).

You are trying to upload the Full zip file and not just the installable theme (please refer to the guide on how to install a theme).

The upload limit on your server isn’t large enough and you must update your PHP.INI file to increase the upload_max_filesize value or contact your webhost to fix it.

ERR_EMPTY_RESPONSE

This error usually means that your server’s upload limit is too small. You should contact your hosting provider to get your upload limit increased to at least 20MB. Also, make sure you are installing the correct file as mentioned in the fist part of this guide.
